Care of Silver Jewellery
On this page you may find some useful information on how to care for your silver jewellery and store it correctly so that it stands the test of time!
Store your silver jewellery correctly:
When you are not wearing your silver jewellery it is important to keep it safe and secure not only from thieves but also from the damage that can be caused by keeping your jewellery stored incorrectly. Our advice is that when you put your jewellery away it should be kept in separate bags and then in separate compartments in a box made especially for jewellery. Investing in a good jewellery box will keep your jewellery in a better condition rather than just throwing it in a draw. Normally each compartment is lined with a soft material to stop scratches and dents occurring even when it is being moved.
Wear your silver jewellery:
Don’t keep it tucked away in a box! Wear your jewellery to keep it fresh and sparkling. In time, oxidation can occur on your silver causing it to become tarnished and discoloured. Wearing your jewellery and handling the silver alone will not only slow this process but keep it looking fresh and polished and as good as new.
Use the correct polishing cloth:
You know that if you polish your glasses with anything but the correct cloth it will cause scratches and damage so why do it with your jewellery? Read the instructions that come with any jewellery cleaning products and follow them. You can buy specialist cloths that come pre-treated with a silver cleaning solution and they will last for a long time. Using these products correctly will not only prolong the life of your jewellery but they will keep them looking great day after day. We do not recommend using anything other than the correct solutions or pastes to clean your silver jewellery as some chemicals could cause irreparable damage!
Best not to dip:
Although dip solutions are readily available in supermarkets and jewellers we do not suggest that you use them. These chemicals are abrasive, they have to be so that they clean your silver jewellery without you having to put in the effort of polishing them. They may work for the first couple of times but soon your jewellery could start to turn in colour and will not look the same as when it was new. The other problems with these dips is that they are not designed to be used on other materials so they can damage any stones or gems that you have inset in to your silver jewellery.
Visit a professional:
These people look after and sell jewellery for a living! That’s why they are called professionals. A lot of jewellers only charge a small fee to clean your jewellery for you and also check it for imperfections and the set of the gemstones to save you losing any by accident.
